You must pick a side! Pick ONE of the two genres below to write in, do not mix them!

This week's genres are:

Bullet; RedBullet; Red Post-Apocalyptic Fairytale vs Dystopian Magical Realism Bullet; RedBullet; Red

  • What is a Post Apocalyptic Fairytale? This is a traditional story, myth, or legend with expressly folkloric elements (which is what separates it from creation myth or god stories), and we want you to set it after the world as we know it has ended. It doesn't have to end with a bang, but society or the physical world as we know it must be over with no hope of coming back. You may base your story on an existing fairytale retold in a post apocalyptic setting OR create one of your own.
  • What is Dystopian Magical Realism? Magical Realism is the slight or hinted at addition of one or two unexplained elements (magic/supernatural/etc) into an otherwise completely real world setting. Only this real world setting is going to be dystopian - which is not the same as post apocalyptic by any means. Though dystopians often result an an apocalypse, they are actually functioning societies where the general population believes/is tricked into believing they live in a utopia, or a paradise, however there are horrible crimes, oppression, or disenfranchisement of masses or subgroups happening in the shadows.

In case you are still confused, here are some examples:

  • Post Apocalyptic Fairytale: The little mermaid leaves the sea and is poisoned by the leftovers of a now nuclear irradiated world she had wanted so badly to join.
  • Dystopian Magical Realism: A mermaid leaves the sea with full hopes of joining human society but via a secret government program is turned into Soylent Fish Fish.

What to do this week:

Bullet; Black Write a story in one of the two genres above, 1,500 words or less, prose only.
Bullet; Red You will have one week to do this.
Bullet; Black No fanfiction, no non-fiction.
Bullet; Red To submit your entry, link it to the journal with the current week’s prompt.

But remember!:

Bullet; Black You don't have to submit to more than one week if you don't want to. Just one, or two is fine. But we hope you submit to all three.
Bullet; Red Only someone who has done all three weeks will be eligible for the final Grand Prize.

:bulletblack: You have until Sunday, September 3 11:59pm PST to submit for Week 3!
