Conflict
verb (used without object)  1. to come into collision or disagreement; be contradictory, at variance, or in opposition; clash:

Conflict.

It's been around since we have been. No matter the best intentions, put two people in a room and they will eventually disagree over something. Everyone comes at things from their own points of view, and that is what this contest is about.

Update: Contest has been extended to September 3, 23:59 PST!

In this contest we challenge you to write a story that has at least two characters who are on opposite sides of a conflict. Remember that not all conflict is harmful, nor does it have to be bad. It doesn't have to be violent or even angry. But what your story does need is two people in opposition to each other over an issue or situation, each with their own reasons. And those reasons must be solid. You'll see why in a minute.

The contest goes in two parts:

Part the First!
:bulletorange: Write a short story between 1,000-5,000 words. Your story will NOT be judged more positively if you have more or less words. We are giving you the range so you can do what your story needs.
:bulletorange: The story must have at least two characters who are on either side of a conflict. One will be your protagonist.
:bulletorange: The characters must both have reason to oppose one another.
:bulletorange: You must choose one of Polti's Thirty-Six Dramatic Situations to base your story around.
:bulletorange: The story must be a complete story, which means it has an arc. It has a setup, a conflict, a climax, a resolution.
:bulletorange: Your characters may not agree and resolve the conflict peacefully, that is allowed. The story needs a resolution, even if the characters don't get one.

When you are done with the first story, here is what you're going to do. Hang on to your butts, we're flipping it all around.

Part the Second!

:bulletorange: Write the exact same story, in 1,000-5,000 words from the opposite character's point of view. Meaning, now you're writing it from the PoV of the antagonist.
:bulletorange: Yes, the wordcount may be different. Write what the story needs to have.
:bulletorange: Again, the story must be a complete story. But if you already know what happens in the first one, you should know what events need to be repeated!

What we're looking for here is 1. a good, solid pair of stories with good pacing, correct grammar, tight writing, and 2. a realistically developed protagonist and antagonist. Let this contest push you to really get inside the mind of both characters and develop them well, with believable goals and mindsets.

This contest will be an excellent showcase for those that love their OC's. Show us who they are, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Make us care, get us into their heads!

The How, Who, and When:

:bulletorange: The contest begins August 1, 2016 and runs until September 3, 2016 11:59PM PST. Results will be posted by Setpember 4.
:bulletorange: Submit your entries by posting them in comments on this journal.
:bulletorange: This contest is open to anyone on DeviantArt.
:bulletorange: All forms of prose literature are welcome, including fan fiction.
:bulletorange: your piece must be new, pre-existing works are not allowed for either of the contest's parts.

Judges are: brennennn, doughboycafe, TheMaidenInBlack, and your friendly neighborhood isthisthingstillon.

And now on to what you want.

Is there any chance this can be extended a little further? I'm so sorry about this, but I just found out about this a few days ago while I was traveling, and I couldn't really think up an idea, and a lot of stuff was going on at the time anyway. I kind of thought of giving up, but I'd like to take a chance and ask for another extension; if not, that's alright. I look forward to seeing the winning entries!

And a question that confused me while trying to come up with ideas for this contest: it says fanfiction is okay, but it talks a lot about writing for an OC. So is it okay to write a fanfic of canon characters for this contest or are we only allowed to use our OC's for the series? I have an idea for either one, and both will probably be finished even if it's not for this contest. x'D
