Contest: The Face-Off

Sun Jul 31, 2016, 11:58 PM
Conflict
verb (used without object)  1. to come into collision or disagreement; be contradictory, at variance, or in opposition; clash:

Conflict.

It's been around since we have been. No matter the best intentions, put two people in a room and they will eventually disagree over something. Everyone comes at things from their own points of view, and that is what this contest is about.

Update: Contest has been extended to September 3, 23:59 PST!

RssSoO by doughboycafe

In this contest we challenge you to write a story that has at least two characters who are on opposite sides of a conflict. Remember that not all conflict is harmful, nor does it have to be bad. It doesn't have to be violent or even angry. But what your story does need is two people in opposition to each other over an issue or situation, each with their own reasons. And those reasons must be solid. You'll see why in a minute.

The contest goes in two parts:

Part the First!
:bulletorange: Write a short story between 1,000-5,000 words. Your story will NOT be judged more positively if you have more or less words. We are giving you the range so you can do what your story needs.
:bulletorange: The story must have at least two characters who are on either side of a conflict. One will be your protagonist.
:bulletorange: The characters must both have reason to oppose one another.
:bulletorange: You must choose one of Polti's Thirty-Six Dramatic Situations to base your story around.
:bulletorange: The story must be a complete story, which means it has an arc. It has a setup, a conflict, a climax, a resolution.
:bulletorange: Your characters may not agree and resolve the conflict peacefully, that is allowed. The story needs a resolution, even if the characters don't get one.

When you are done with the first story, here is what you're going to do. Hang on to your butts, we're flipping it all around.

Part the Second!

:bulletorange: Write the exact same story, in 1,000-5,000 words from the opposite character's point of view. Meaning, now you're writing it from the PoV of the antagonist.
:bulletorange: Yes, the wordcount may be different. Write what the story needs to have.
:bulletorange: Again, the story must be a complete story. But if you already know what happens in the first one, you should know what events need to be repeated!

What we're looking for here is 1. a good, solid pair of stories with good pacing, correct grammar, tight writing, and 2. a realistically developed protagonist and antagonist. Let this contest push you to really get inside the mind of both characters and develop them well, with believable goals and mindsets.

This contest will be an excellent showcase for those that love their OC's. Show us who they are, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Make us care, get us into their heads!

The How, Who, and When:

:bulletorange: The contest begins August 1, 2016 and runs until September 3, 2016 11:59PM PST. Results will be posted by Setpember 4.
:bulletorange: Submit your entries by posting them in comments on this journal.
:bulletorange: This contest is open to anyone on DeviantArt.
:bulletorange: All forms of prose literature are welcome, including fan fiction.
:bulletorange: your piece must be new, pre-existing works are not allowed for either of the contest's parts.

Judges are: brennenxr, doughboycafe, TheMaidenInBlack, and your friendly neighborhood overdebated.

And now on to what you want.

Is there any chance this can be extended a little further? I'm so sorry about this, but I just found out about this a few days ago while I was traveling, and I couldn't really think up an idea, and a lot of stuff was going on at the time anyway. I kind of thought of giving up, but I'd like to take a chance and ask for another extension; if not, that's alright. I look forward to seeing the winning entries!

And a question that confused me while trying to come up with ideas for this contest: it says fanfiction is okay, but it talks a lot about writing for an OC. So is it okay to write a fanfic of canon characters for this contest or are we only allowed to use our OC's for the series? I have an idea for either one, and both will probably be finished even if it's not for this contest. x'D

I'm sorry, unfortunately we've already given an extension, so we really can't extend again. But I hope you can join in the next contest!

Oh and for your question there, both would have been acceptable.

WELL     it is just in time because I procrastinated     and didn't start until a week ago     and wrote the majority on the day of     literally into the last few minutes before I had to stop     so the second half isn't nearly as polished     and I'm sorry ... but I hope you enjoy it. I liked the prompt!

Well, I think it's time for me to throw in the towel on this one. I still hope to finish my piece but it won't be in time for the deadline. It grew into something more than I expected, which I guess is valuable in its own right, so thank you for the inspiration motivation to write, just sorry I won't be entering even with the extension!

Do-to-do-doo! :aww:

27.1 - here we are now, entertain us.
The car groans softly as Mom puts it in park. She parked as far from the mall's front doors as possible. Of course. She cranks her window all the way up, then motions to me to do the same with mine. She pulls the sun-visor down and fixes her lipstick. While she's busy, I reach down and grab my purse, slinging it up and over my shoulder. I rest my hand on the door handle, waiting for her to finish.
She doesn't even glance at me when she says, "You're going to bring that?"
"Yeah. Why'd you think I grabbed it before we left?"
She stares at me for a moment, then gets out. I sigh and step out, too.
Mom's hands flit around her hair and needle at her shirt and skirt. She clutches her bag like it might escape her at any moment. I listen to the click of our heels on the asphalt until she turns her preening to me,
27.2 - with the lights out, it's less dangerous.
We pull into the mall parking lot a few minutes after noon. I pick a parking space close to the exit so when we finish we can leave quickly. I shift the gear into park and lean over to crank my window up, motioning to Kyle to do the same.
I pull the sun-visor down and grab my lipstick out of my purse, fixing up the edges before we get out. I see him shift out of the corner of my eye and grab something off the floor.
       "You're going to bring that?"
"Yeah. Why'd you think I grabbed it before we left?" Of course he's going to bring it.
I look at him for a long moment, then get out. I hear his door slam shut.
I pluck at my hair and clothes, pushing and pulling them into comfortable positions. I'm nervous; I can feel my nails gouging the cracked leather of my purse. My fingers are begging for a cigarette.

I have a story idea that would be great to show both sides of, but I'm not sure it exactly fits into one of the 36 Dramatic Situations. The best one I could see that works with it is "Conflict with a God." One of the reasons I think it wouldn't work is because my character isn't actually a god. He is immortal though, (unless he gets stabbed too many times with a pointy object) and some think he's like a god. Would it still be okay to use my idea?

It can still work. God doesn't have to mean actual God and nothing else, it's more about mundane mortality versus a greater power, so go for it.

I just finished the draft for the first part of my story. I still have part two then editing, but when I'm done do I just post it all in a comment or what do I do?
I know that the journal says to post them in the comments, but a 10,000 word comment seems a bit long, so do you want a link, or what? Or does it even matter?

Hi,

What we mean is create a literature deviation (I suggest using sta.sh writer) and leave a link to the deviation you have submitted in a comment on this journal. If you need help figuring out how to do that, let me know!

Ok. I've posted a couple so I think I got that down. Just one more question. It doesn't specify a preferred writing format in the contest rules. Personally I  prefer APA. But I know generally contests like this like to see some cut off of MLA. So will APA be a problem, or should I change my format before posting. I'm in the process of proofing right now so this would be the best time to change the format. :)
Ps. Thanks for the answer!

Are multiple submissions allowed? Basically I have two ideas for this contest and, if I can finish both in time, I'd like to submit both, but understand if that's not allowed. I just didn't see anything about multiple submissions in the rules. Thank you!

If you actually manage 4 stories out of this from writing 2 full entries I'll be quite impressed. And that is not to say you can't do it, I just mean, actually that will be very impressive! I look forward to seeing them.
