Answer to the New Watchers Question

Journal Entry: Fri Sep 11, 2015, 11:25 AM

I got a note from an admin today. The watchers thing is nothing to worry about, apparently, and they aren't bots.

quoth the admin:

"There have been some recent updates to the way new users are greeted during the signup process. To help acclimate them to the community they are encouraged to watch deviants which will then populate their Watch Feed with awesome content for them to interact with. Our Watch Recommendations feature includes a mix of community and artistically minded deviants. Because Watch Recommendations are only available to new deviants – those who’ve just joined DeviantArt.com – it was important for us to represent the depth and breadth of all DeviantArt.com has to offer. This includes deviants who have proven to be friendly and community-active, as well as deviants who have reached a standard of artistic excellence. "

admin also goes on to say that 1. if you have received a DD recently, then you pop up as a Watch Recommendation and 2. this Watch Recommendation Widget is only available to new members, so that is why the rest of us didn't know wtf it was.

no issues then. back to our regularly scheduled lives. and thanks Ikue for clearing that up rather than let our paranoia run rampant.

This explains a lot. So :devart: is saying that suggested artists come up for the new members to watch?
On the downside, getting so many new watchers may cause members to not check out the new folks,
because there are just too many coming in at one time, and members aren't bothering to go through them all.

Thank you for this, I recently posted a question on the forums about the exact same thing and was linked this page. It makes more sense now, although one of my leading hypotheses was already such new member functionality (but I created my account such a long time ago the site was entirely different at the time).

Although I still don't know how I have gotten onto the watch recommendations list, I can only take it as a positive. :)

can't see the point with a watch from one without a gallery and faves and not even replying at all..i don't like it at all...why do they need to watch, what is the point?? Can't get it.....why not just browse dA;s gallery if they wanna look at art without saying a pip or favving!! On MM they can't just be a member without having their own gallery....to be there for a reason...and I can't see a reason to be watched by 100 'deviants' not active at all...!!! Van't get the point with it!!

I totally agree! I've asked dA to take me off the recommended list as I got hundreds of new watchers and not one comment or fave from any of them. Pointless.

DeviantART should still give deviants an option as to whether or not they want to be "recommended" to newbies. Again, the community wasn't notified that this was the "new" norm. Suddenly there were deviants getting swarmed with watches from blank sites. In the groups I admin deviants must be active to be a member, and each join request is vetted. When vetting if the site is blank and yet the new deviant belongs to 250 groups then that sends up a red flag. There are times I suspect some blank sites being more interested in finding art to reupload to other sites rather than being part of a greater community.

I've received some legit watches, but last night I got one from someone who apparently has been here for 2 years. When going to that person's profile I was blasted with pornography, graphic porn. Nudes are a part of art, even erotic scenes. This was so bad my husband went, "What the hell, that's worse than the porn sites." Maybe I'm off the point, but I don't want someone like that watching me. I'm not holding my breath for a DD, so I think with that I'm safe. I don't want to put an adult block on myself, some of the adult art is beautiful. Has it come to that?

Thanks for the info :) I'm not sure what I think about this new feature. I think it might be a bit unfair. And it makes life very easy for all those spammer accounts we've been having lately.

So only new Deviants get to see this Watch Recommendation list and those watch recommendations are based upon DD's or have those proven to be "friendly and community active"? And, potentially anyone could be on this "Watch Recommendation" list, whether they've paid for an account or not? Whereas someone like myself, who has a paid subscription would receive less coverage, than someone that has qualified for the recommendation? Am I understanding this correctly? Don't get me wrong, I'm not whining or complaining, I'm just curious.

glad to know that, thanks for telling :)
But nevertheless, why can't the admins just make their idea public so that everybody knows about this new feature, and why can't they just ask the deviants for their opinion before? ._. I mean most of those new watchers I get are empty accounts which I'll never ever hear of again, and think most people who're flooded with watchers these days know what I mean ... >_>

I'm facing the same, I got a DD on Aug 25 and still flooded by new and "empty" watchers.
At least now I know that is not a problem (for now maybe!)

It isn't the new deviants searching for other deviants to watch that bothers me, it is the blank sites that stay blank for months or years but watch a plethora of deviants, as well as join hundreds of groups. I question such sites because some could be on the lookout for art to 'steal' art by downloading deviations and uploading them to other sites. Some of my works have been uploaded to sites that require a fee to download, and my wallpapers are on many different sites, most not linking back to the originals. Deviants can find their own stolen art by Googling their screen name(s). Information is embedded into the deviations that are reposted "as is" and can be found on a search.

yeah, that's what I had noticed too. Some of them might be customers who buy prints or merchandise on DA and then might occasionally brows for new art. But as I'm stock provider too, I kept asking myself what are they doing on my stock account. Probably to download free images and then to print them.

Please feel free to share your thoughts maxlake2.deviantart.com/journa…

We :iconnudagimo: :iconmocris: :iconevelivesey: :iconcd-stock: want to create a petition to dA and collect your signatures.
We demand the removal of the possibility "right click save" and removal of the possibility of the download by blocked users etc.
If I block an user I dont want that he/she has the permission to download my resources.

... but a watch recommendation for spammers too then. spammers have been here since before this. yes I've recently got a DD but the 3 spammers I got this morning either say inappropriate nasty things on one of my photos, or they are not saying hi they are just posting a link they want me to click to make more money or whatever scheme. Those don't sound like nice new people to me.

Huh, that is pretty nice, and I do remember seeing news for that feature, so I now sincerely apologize for my paranoia and accusations of bot invasion >__>

Perhaps I should start talking to them =P (I do remember talking to a few at the very start, which was why I assumed they weren't bots initially, lol)

in my own defense I never saw any journal announcing this, but that is probably because I was on a hiatus when the entire site redesign went down and now I cant find anything. but then again I haven't bothered to try so hard to find anything anymore, either. But yeah, no need for worry.

I'm not sure what do you fear from these accounts, but frankly, that explanation doesn't really mean they're not bots. It just shows how your account gets singled out by them ^^;

I had a similar experience on another site. Within minutes of getting featured there, my account was swarmed with new 'watchers' that could only be bots (signed in minutes before watching me; no activity apart from adding me to the watch; stay idle forever). I have no doubts that these accounts came at me in such numbers because of the feature, but it's also clear they're not legitimate users. It's hard to say what they do, though. They might be just there to boost the stats of the website, or they might be somehow used to copy and reproduce whatever I posted there :hmm:

So, just to bring a little rain on the parade :D On the bright side, even if they're bots, they're probably not doing anything malicious... Probably ^^;

I'm more just comforted to know that dA is aware of this, whether it's bots or not. I am not sure what they could or could not do, but spam is annoying at best whenever you get it. If they are only just watching me it's harmless but if they were to say, start link spamming or something, it's a pain in the ass to block them all. Or if they have text copy abilities, another problem there. But whatever, looks like it's under watch, whatever it is.

Hmmm ... interesting. I'm never sure how to feel about social platforms that do this kind of thing. It's nice to get new watchers (I've gotten a handful), but a lot of them don't stick around so it feels like an empty gesture. :shrug: A "how to get involved in the dA community" video might be more useful to new members.

I believe it is partially true. It's pretty common now for sites to push new accounts to watch others during the sign-up process. However, the vast number of accounts, and the ones that remain entirely empty days/weeks later, doesn't jive. Though, it's a good cover/excuse for any legitimate shenanigans. :D

Every few days I visit the TODAY page, scrolling down to the New Deviants Lounge to see who's just joined. I should remember to look every day and welcome new deviants.

But the bots won't appear there, will they? Noooo, the masters are wise to our ways, I fear. CURSE YOU!
